Yesterday was the last day of the first quarter which means that we officially made count! திஸ் இஸ் கிரேட் நியூஸ் பெகுசே சிங்கள் பாமிலீஸ் கேன் நோ லோங்கேர் த்ரியடேன் டு சட் டோவ்ன் ஒஉர் ஸ்கூல், வெள் திஸ் ஸ்கூல் இயர் அன்ய்வேஸ், அண்ட் ஜஸ்ட் in time because as you might have imagined....there is another shit storm rising.

Fast forward to after school, James and I are doing our grades (last day of the quarter) வென் ஒஉர் சுபெரிண்டேண்டேன்ட் சாஸ் உப. வெள், ஹி ஜஸ்ட் கமே அவுட் (ஹெர் அண்ட் ஹல்ப் கார் ரீடே) டு சட வித் உச பெகுசே அப்பறேன்ட்லி தேரே இஸ் எ டிச்க்ருன்ட்லேத் பரென்ட். ஓம்பிக்!! சோ எஅத், ஷி கள்ளேந்து தி சுபெரிண்டேண்டேன்ட் டு பிட்ச் அபௌட் மீ. இ மேதான் ஹொவ் டர் இ வான்ட் ஹேர் கிட டு கம் டு ஸ்கூல் எவெரி சிங்கள் டே!! ஹிஸ் சொளுதியன்: வி ஆர் கோயன் டு பெ ஓனே ஒப் ஒஉர் ஐதேஸ் டு கோ பிக் ஹிம் உப எவர்ய்டி. மி சுபெரிண்டேண்டேன்ட் இஸ் சோ கூல், ஹி வாஸ் ஜஸ்ட் லைக், இப் தி இஸ்ஸுஎ இஸ் தி கிட நாட் கமிங் டு ஸ்கூல், லேட்'ச ஜஸ்ட் கோ கெட் ஹிம். ஹி'ச சோ மேட்டர் பாச்ட், லைக், வி திட் யு எவென் போதர் டு இன்ச்ளுடே தி பரென்ட் இன் திஸ்? சோ yeah, that's what we are going to do. I wanted to include a picture but I don't have any new ones because my camera broke, so this is a picture my computer took of me, checking my email in the hotel lobby.

Pretty jazzed because I just arrived in Anchorage for a Health Conference, M-W. It has taken almost 12 hours, first I had to drive from கோப்ப்மன் டு க்ளவோக், then fly from Klawock to Ketchikan, board a new flight that flew to Wrangell, Petersburg, Juneau (where we picked up some prisoners), and then FINALLY to Anchorage. It was worth it though; I needed to get off the island.

I’m going to get my haircut, carve pumpkins, and catch up with my family in the ANC area. Debauchery to follow, I’ll try to include photos..........

Last week my Dad sent me another huge care package, just in time for Halloween (Thanks Dad!). The lady at the post office on cue asked me if I brought my rig, I reminded her for literally the 12^th time that I DON’T HAVE a vehicle here. She told me to run and catch Clint to see if he could assist me with the package. I ran outside and found Clint driving the city backhoe….so I put my package in the bucket and climbed in the cab. I was the envy of my students walking home.

Scene: Alaska Air Lines flight from Ketchikan to Wrangell

Flight attendant: would you like some water?

Me: Yes, can you just pour it into my water bottle.

Flight attendant: No, I can only pour the water into plastic cups.

Me: (confused)

Then she gives me a double (plastic) cup of water. I actually thought it was kind of funny because I knew that she did it on purpose just to piss me off.

I'm actually kind of surprised of exactly how angry I still am. This is the last thing that I'm going to say about this situation.

Wow. Has this been a week, and it’s only Wednesday. Where to start? Well, the number of students in our school increased by a third this week. Yes, we now have 15 students! Which is good news in theory, because this month is “count” and if we don’t have at least 10 students then we lose all federal money and our school closes. This is a stress I never would have imagined when I decided to become a teacher, any who, we five new kids!! One pre-k, a kindergartener, 1^st, 3^rd, and 6^th grader.

Look, I'm working again in Hollis, AK

Some of my avid readers (both of you) may have noticed that I deleted my last post. My reason for this is two-fold. First, it was really negative and while I still feel totally justified in feeling the way I did, I generally try to be positive and look on the bright side of things. Second, and arguably more importantly, I had a realization as I was walking home last night….it vaas this, man, ip anypooti in this koommunitti chtumpleeth achroochs mi plaak, i voulthu loochee mi p-ink choop. i taan’th knov hov this voulthu happeen, ach paar ach i knov, thee taan’th yeven knov i havee ye plaak, ant moochat peoplee taan’th havee intarnet at theyar hoomees choo i voulthu che thi chanches op theem pintin it aar almoost nil, pat stil, I really like my job.

Three things I like about my job this week:

On Monday, Chrissy (the girl who lives in the other half of the duplex) invited me to go down to the docks to get free shrimp from a fishing boat. Intrigued and needing a break from school, I followed her down there. Sure as shit, free shrimp. This boat comes into port a couple of weeks out of the month and give away the shrimp that are too small to sell. So I got a five gallon bucket full of shrimp! They were still alive so I had the job of ripping their little heads off, by the time we were done with this, I only had half a five gallon bucket of shrimp, no worries this is plenty. I also learned something in this adventure….the reason you don’t have to de-vein shrimp anymore is because when they are caught, they get spraid with this chemical that makes them puke so their digestive track is clean. So I definitely rinsed my shrimps very good and will probably never buy shrimp again. I have to say though, they taste really good!

On Wednesday, again with Chrissy (she is also the kindergarten aide) we went to Hollis to observe another kindergarten class. We were both really excited. First, it was sunny, and I’ve said it before, you simply CANNOT beat SE Alaska when it is sunny, it’s a fact. Second, we learned a lot and third we got a chance to do some much needed shopping in Craig and Klawock, all together good trip. For lunch we went down to the water and then practiced some yoga. It’s always awesome to be in the presence of anybody who appreciates nature as much as I do and this girl has an amazing appreciation for Alaska. She is a bad ass.

Finally, I’m teaching Social Studies, World History, Health, and PE. There are teachers who would kill for this schedule. I’ve been told by a lot of people that I would NEVER find a job teaching social studies and here I am. Teaching my favorite subjects in my content area. Granted these parents are impossible to please but honestly, I will take demanding parents over absent parents every single day of the week. So no worries, thing are good on the POW Island.
