Double Dutch

Meg, one of my coworkers brought two jump ropes with her this summer to Double Dutch. We spent about two hours trying to figure it out. We were never able to jump in. We could do it from a stand-still but couldn't figure out exactly how to run in. IF anybody remembers how to jump in - please contact me. We have made it our personal goal for the summer to master this sport. Once we figure out how to jump in, we are going to work on our style and grace and then we are going to start competing.
It was great because we were practicing right in front of our shop and everybody who passed wanted a piece of it. It was great fun, but I've been sore for three days as a result. I'm not kidding, every muscle in my body is sore from just a couple of hours.

Family Photo

Last Sunday, two of my housemates, Carson and Erich took the train to glacier station, where we hiked as fast as we could to Laughton Glacier. We had less than two hours to hike about five miles up to the glacier and back so that we could make the last train of the day, with the alternative being to walk down the railroad tracks for 14 miles until we made it back to town. So we practically ran, but it was totally worth it because we got this rad photo.

Pirate Dance Party

It was even better than I imagined. Everyone turned out and dressed up. There was a lot of dancing. There was a pirate flag!!! This picture is the back of our house. The flag is staying up all summer. I don't know if you can tell but the crossbones are actually wrenches (because we're a bike shop). Check out all those cool bikes!
Recently, my housemate and myself have been taking turns cooking dinner for everybody. I cooked Caribbean food on Friday for the party, very fitting.
On my first tour last Friday (the day of the party), I had two tatoo artist in the van. I couldn't believe it. They totally gave me some pirate tatoos with a sharpie, for free!

Cancer Walk Update :

Grover and I won for best theme!

70's Party

Last week it was the 80's, this weekend it's the 70's, next weekend the Sockeye House is hosting a pirate party (guess who's idea that was?). When you're living a small town with a bunch of young kids you don't really need a reason to party, but it is always more fun when you can dress up!

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

There was a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk here in Skagway yesterday. The company that I work for sponsored one of the aid booths along the way. I still don't really understand why they needed aid stations for a 5k walk, but whatever....anyways nobody that I worked with wanted anything to do with the aid table because it meant getting up early on our day off. The station was supposed to have a theme and apparently there was some type of prize to be one for the best station. I kind of got sucker into helping because I felt bad. The only person who offered to work the station was my friend, Grover. His idea for the table was that we dress up in drag, blow bubbles, dance and paint peoples faces as they walk by. Most people agreed that drag probably wasn't the most appropriate theme for a cancer walk, but Grover wouldn't budge on the idea. So long story-short, we got up early, drank some Bloody Marys, got dressed in drag and worked the table. There were several scared children but it was all worth it in the end. I don't know if we won the prize but we definitely should have!

Here's a picture of our table. The sign is the best part: Lets DRAG cancer out of our lives. That's Grover, blowing bubbles and shaking his ass.

Upper Dewey Lake

My friend Rachel and I decided to go on a hike on Sunday. Nobody that we knew of had made it to Upper Dewey Lake yet... that we knew of, so we figured we should give it a try. Despite the fact that several people had told us that the trail was still partially covered in snow, we powered through. Me in shorts and Rachel, well she wasn't even wearing socks. The last mile was completely covered in snow. We fell through several times, sometimes up to our waist. We were freezing but we made it!

80's Dance Party

Last night some people in town hosted an 80's Dance Party. It was fun as it sounds. I really let loose. In three words, I was out of control. The best part about the entire night was that at 11 we all went and picked up our newest Sockeye employee from the airport. I imagined he had to be confused when he walked through the terminal and saw six pretty drunk people dressed like we were from the 80's. He was really cool though, we came back to the house, dropped off his stuff, dressed him up and went back to the party. It was great.
