What haven't I been doing?

I know it’s been a very long time, too long, some would say. Fortunately, this absence was caused by sure awesomeness in its most magnificent form, not from sleep deprivation and lesson planning. In short, Glacier Bay is the most wild (literally) place I’ve ever been and I’ve been completely swallowed by its beauty. I’ve had lots of realizations and have done plenty of epic things worthy of blogging about, but  have not made writing a priority. For this, I apologize to all my loyal readers. I would like to think that once I get back to Thorne Bay on August 20th, I’ll be blogging on a more regular basis. It’s also noteworthy that my Internet access totally SUCKS. That doesn’t make blogging any more appealing. All of this still begs the question, What the hell have I been doing for the last month? In one word: EVERYTHING.

For starters, that teacher’s trip that I did was life altering. I truly do see my relationship with the planet and others slightly different after that experience and might be considering living in a commune on Lemuserier Island.

I’ve been guiding a fair amount, which is totally fun but completely exhausting. I’ve spent the majority of my summer at Point Adolphus on Chichagof Island, yeah, THE Point Adolphus, home to the largest congregation on humpback whales. I’ve been serenaded by the sounds of whales breathing and breaching all summer. Have you ever fallen asleep or woken up to this? It makes me think that I can never summer anywhere else. It’s a transformative experience; everyone should try it.

Carrie Sabochik came to town. That makes her my first non-family visitor, even though I consider her my soul sister. Good job Carrie! We had tons of fun. Happs included taking a 6-hour boat ride to Haines for the Southeast Alaskan State Fair for the weekend. Tons of good music, food and people. I got a feather in my hair! All around good time. On Monday we took a trip “Up Bay” which means that we caught a tour boat going up bay to the glaciers, oh man was it cool. We saw orcas, bears, puffins, wolves!, sea lions, sea otters, seals, and bunch of other birds that I can never seem to remember. The animals were cool, but the best parts was watching the glaciers calf and create huge waves.

Speaking of awesome people visiting, my best friend Kara Nelson is coming to town on Monday, woot woot! She’s going to kick-it in Gustavus with me for about a week and then we are going to depart on an epic journey, heading south, where we will eventually end up in Thorne Bay. Our plan is to get to Sitka and do some hiking. I am really excited.

So yeah, I only have like a week and a half left in Gustavus. Crazy. I can hardly believe it’s almost school time again. I must admit that I am really excited about starting my second year of teaching. I’m also surprisingly excited to get back to Thorne Bay. There is something comforting about that place, hmmmmm.

Well, I hope that every person has had an enjoyable summer. I would actually love to hear all about. While the Internet is slow, I can still receive emails at:
